Zillion

Akai Koudan Zillion
(Red Photon Zillion)
N/A

A cross between 'Metroid' and 'Impossible Misson'. Your mission is to infiltrate the Norsa base and steal five confidential floppy disk then set the self destruct and get out... fast!

On top of this you must also rescue your team mates Champ and Apple who have already attempted this dangerous mission but were caught and imprisoned. Once they are freed you can select to play as them at any point. Each of the characters has their own strengths and weaknesses so choose wisely.

The gameplay is deceptively complex. What seems like little more than running around underground corridoors, shooting robots on the surface is actually a deep and relitivley tough adventure game. The structure is surprisingly non-linear considering it's time of release and fits the TV series perfectly. You are required to write down random codes which control specific actions like laser barriers and locked doors. The codes are random and often need you to use up one of your limited supply of ID cards to use. Planning your mission is very important!

Most modern gamers will be put off by the dodgy graphics and sound and that's a real shame. This game was sadly overlooked on it's release back when player (myself included) were more interested in action packed coin-op conversions than indepth puzzles. Fortunately more and more people are discovering this game through emulation and if you've never tried Zillion before then I recommend giving it a try. But beware; there is much to do with only three continues and no passwords or saves!

Uses the music from the TV show.

Note:- This game was also released in the west on the Master System. Unusually both versions are identical.
Also the western version is one of the few Master System games to have a
'Mark III Mode'. Put simply it has both Japanese and English language text and checks the region of the console to find which to display.
