Cyborg 009

A pretty bog-standard action-platform game based on the popular characters.

The game makes impressive use of the Mega CD's audio and video capabilities with an anime style animated opening and numerous story sequences between stages. The plot of the game involves a mysterious girl who 009 narrowly avoids running down while out driving in France. He takes her back to the team's HQ only to find out she's a spy! All this unfolds in true anime style with a full CD audio soundtrack featuring the music and voice cast of the series.

Unfortunately the actual game sections aren't as impressive. You control 009 as he jumps around locations from the story armed only with a gun and his ability to dash-jump (faster than the screen can scroll). The in game graphics and gameplay a pretty standard stuff the only exception being stage two which is played out as 009 runs at super speed along a coastal road. You can't stop and have to battle enemies as you run, similar stages appear in the Eightman game.

Cyborg 009 isn't particularly difficult, although you return to the start of the stage when you die, and the bosses are especially easy to beat. The music is good throughout. Sound effects are nothing special with the occasional digitised samples sounding very crackly. This game can really only be recommended to fans of the characters.

It's worth noting that you can save you progress onto the Mega CD back-up RAM and continue from where you left off.
