Based on Katsuhiro Otomo's animated movie of his mammoth manga series. The year is 2019 and the city of Neo-Tokyo is a post-apocalyptic ruin roamed by motor bike gangs. You play the role of Kaneda out to find the truth behind the militaries intentions for his friend Tetsuo and unravel the mystery of Akira.

Unfortunately Akira is more or less unplayable unless you can read Japanese as this is a 'Graphic Adventure' style point and click game. The story picks up at the point where Kaneda and his gang have been taken in for questioning by the police and Tetsuo is in the hands of the government scientists.

The stills are directly based on clips from the movie but sadly you may not see many of them unless you can either read Japanese or are happy to sit and blindly click away until you do the right thing.

If you do manage to make some progress but unfortunatly die, you can continue from the point you finished with the help of a password, in Japanese of course.

The game itself came in a hard plastic case rather than the cardboard boxes which were usual for Famicom games. This was a Taito standard.
